Wing - Left Wing

2004-02-01 - Finished riveting left wing skeleton. (2.0 Hrs).

I looked at the bad rivets again this morning. Except for one extremely bad rivet, things were not that bad. I solved my problems with the lower rivets on the rear spar by using my ofset rivet set. I still had one really bad rivet, but the rivet that I added next to it looks ok. Since the mangled rivet is too big to fill with a 1/8" rivet, I either need to just drill it out and leave a hole, or get a bigger rivet.

I finally got to use my offset rivet set. Look at that honking big thing. My, it's a big one. This fixed my problems with the bent rivets on the lower side of the rear spar. This really is not as hard to use as everyone said. It worked great. Not a single smiley on any of my rivet heads.
Error

This is the bad rivet. This is by far the worst rivet that I have ever set. I drilled this out 4 times, and this is the final result. Looks like I need a bigger rivet. Notice that the extra rivet that I added next to it came out ok.

Error

Update 2/8/04 - I drilled out the bad rivet one more time, and added a pop rivet, just to fill the hole. This is just cosmetic, since the new rivet carries the load for the bad rivet.

Error

Update 2/8/04 - on the inside, even the pop rivet does not set perfectly. This hole is jinxed!

Error

Update 5/1/04 - fixed the rivet from hell! I got some 3/16" pop-rivets from Van's last month. After drilling out the rivet from hell, the 3/16" pop rivet filled the hole nicely.

Here's the final left wing skeleton (note, wing is upside down).
