2004-05-08 - Wing skin preparation and assembly. (4.5 Hrs).

Ever since Dan Checkoway said the FAA only wanted to see pictures of him working on the plane, Dufus has been worrying about the FAA not believing that he built this thing. So he showed-up this weekend to get his picture taken again.

Here I am deburring the top skins before dimpling.

I use the Vixen file to do most of the skin edge deburring. The file is long and very flat, so it makes a nice flat edge that gets rid of all of the tooling grooves in the edge. I taught Dufus to do this, which proves that any idiot can do a good job deburring.

Here's the W-423 joint plate cleco'd on to the leading edge. It is a little hard to tell, but I have used the edge roller on the edge of the leading edge skin in order to get the edge tight against the joint plate. As you can see, there is still a little bit of a bump on the front, but not as bad as it was a month ago when I first fit the tank skin to the W-423 and the leading edge.

There is a gap where there is no cleco, but the skin is tight under the clecos. The edge roller is the tool from Cleveland Tools that Sam Buchanan suggested on his website. At close to $40, it's fairly expensive, but I really like what it does. I am hoping that it will solve the problem of the bump on the front of the tank skin.

All right, first rivets in the leading edge. That was easy, but I am too tired to do any more today.
